Mountain Merapi is the only active volcano in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, moreover it is said as one of the most active volcano in the world. With height 2968 m. dml (2001) or 3079 meters above city of Jogja, Mount Merapi lies on 7°32,5' LS and 110°26,5' BT, thus administratively this mountain stands on Sleman, Magelang, Boyolali, and Klaten.

This strato mountain with lava crater is famous of its lava which occurs from the crater eventually. The beauty of its lava can be enjoyed from the city of Jogja with bare eyes since the lava is brightly shining, moreover when it happens at night. However, if you want to see it closer, you might come to several observation post by contacting the officers first; such as from Pos Pengamatan Kaliurang (two posts), Pos Pengamatan Babadan, Krinjing, Jrakah, and Selo.

For Javanese society, Mount Merapi is their source of spiritual power. Every year on the month of Rejeb, Kraton Yogyakarta helds traditional ceremony for Mount Merapi just to make the mountain "calm" as well as the traditional sacrifiction for the Queen of South Sea. The ceremony is known as Labuhan.

Tourism of Mount Merapi is developed in various forms; for instance Kawasan Wisata Kaliurang, Kaliadem, Kalikuning, Merapi Golf, Hutan Wisata Turgo-Plawangan, and Pendakian Alam Gunung Merapi. They are managed sufficiently with restaurants and motels around the tourism object's location.
