Candi Barong lies on the Batur Agung hill, precisely in the Candi Sari, Sambirejo, Prambanan sub-district, Sleman. It’s named Candi Barong by local residents due to the existence of “kala” decorations on each side on the temple’s body. The decorations resemble a lion/ Barongan.
Barong temple was predicteded built around the 9th-10th century AD. Then it’s discovered in around 1913 of the early 20th century in collapsed condition by a Dutch when there was expansion of sugarcane plantations to increase the sugar mills production. The temple was in ruins condition so it’s difficult to identified its original form. Barong Temple restoration began in 1987. The main temple of Barong temple was completely refurbished in 1992 and was continued restored talud and fences.
Barong temple was predicted as Hindu temple and became a worship place to Wishnu because was discovered statue of Dewi Sri (the goddess of fertility whom wife of Wishnu) and goddess Lakshmi, Wishnu accompaniment. There’s also a winged shellfish garnish (Sankha), which is one of the the god Wishnu’s symbols , and the top of the building that forms the jewels (ratna). This temple building was predicted as a worship place for asking fertility. This may be related to the condition of the soil around the temples that were less fertile, so that by worshiping Goddess Sri, it’s expected that the soil will become fertile.
This temple complex is devided into three terrace which the the back one is the highest terrace. On the highest terrace there is a hallway and two temples without window and door. The first temple measure is 8.20 meters x 8.20 meters with a height of 9.25 meters, while the second temple measure is 8.25 meters x 8.25 meters with a height of 9.25 meters. On each side of the temple there are relung/ niches with kala and makara decoration. The highest terrace is the most sacred from all. Their differences lies on the decoration and the statue. Based on these two things, the first temple’s estimated became a worship place to the god of Wishnu, while the second temple for the goddess of Sri.
In the second terrace there is a building with size of 12.30 meters x 7.80 meters and some octagonal stone foundation. They’re estimated became the foundation of pendapa/ hall with roof of wood. While on the first terrace’s not found the structure.
Overall, the complex of Barong temple was built in two phases. Those could been seen from several indications found in the restoration time such as the findings of the talud from the first development phase where could be seen on the south side of the second temple. In the first phase, only one temple was built, that was the first temple. In the second phase there was expansion of the third terrace to the south side and the construction of the second temple on the south of the first temple.
