Ketingan Tourism Village

This tourism village's history began with a road inauguration by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X in 1997. In it is held, suddenly came a lot of Heron birds into the village, and they were become more and more and nesting in the trees in this village until now. At late afternoon, they reach thousands. Since 2000, the village was officiallied as a tourism village by Sri Sultan, Yogyakarta King.

The birds are coming during the rainy season when they enter the breeding season. At the first time, residents worried about the existence of Heron flock that migrated to their village. They feared if these birds would disturb rice plants or melinjo trees which become the main source of their livelihood. But the fact was the birds didn’t ruin plants and even they became a tourist attraction attracting many tourists.

Until now, Ketingan residents have high careness in maintance the existence of Heron bird communities in their area. Their commitment and concern for protecting the environment and habitat of heron birds are leading this village become one of the conservation village in Yogyakarta. These birds begin to live comfortably in some trees such as johar trees, mlinjo trees, adem-adem ati trees, bamboo trees, jackfruit trees and flamboyant trees.

Heron Watching While Farming

The existance of Heron flocks in Hamlet Ketingan has become a tourism attraction which attract many tourists. Especially for those who love the animals world. Visitors can also follow the residents’  daily activities such as farming in rice fields, joining the traditional art activities, and also follow the practice to make some typical food and baverage.

If you want to spend the night in this tourism village, the number of homes can be rented as homestay. At night, visitors can hear the crickets and frogs, also see fireflies that may be rarely found in urban areas.
