Initially the area of Kebonagung was a part of Surakarta Sultanate but nowadays Kebonagung is already a part of Yogyakarta Region. When Kebonagung was part of Surakarta Sultanate, Kebonagung become a supplier food for its surrounding. Beside that, Kebonagung also be used as a place to exile garwa concubine of King Surakarta. In the Java language, commonly exile is called dikebonkan. Since then, this region is famous as Kebonagung.
Since many years ago, Kebonagung villagers rely their livelihoods through farming and livestock raising animals. Mostly the farmers don’t have their own field but they are paid to work on someone fields. As additional information, there are also sand miners who lived in the Kebonagung. It is feared that the erosion will occur when sand is taken continuously. Because of that, the villagers built a dam to anticipate the erosion. Moreover a dam can be used to irrigate the field around Kebonagung area. Kebonagung’s dam has great view from vegetation around it. From here, villager begins with an idea to make a village tour Kebonagung Village which offers the experience of living in the village and its natural beauty. Thus Kebonagung become agriculture-based rural tourism and cultural education. Something that happened in chronological Kebonagung Village for 10 years is as follows:
1. 2003: Pokdarwis (Tourism Awareness Group) started to be formed.
2. 2005: Great Pond Tegal began to get attention from visitors
3. 2006: Kebonagung began receiving guests, one of which is a group of children from SMA 71 Jakarta.
4. 2007: River dammed to irrigate southern Opak Imogiri.
5. 2008: The dam was inaugurated as a tourist attraction
6. 2009: Selected as a Presidential project period 2009-2014 (in Java, there are only 3 villages selected)
7. 2010: an independent program of community tourism will receive funding of Rp 60 million to revive the dance group, gejog mortar, gong, jathilan, medium barrel (tambourine for the elderly), and buy uniforms and equipment necessary for the development process.
Kebonagung Village is one of the tourist village located in Imogiri subdistrict, Bantul and 98% of the population are Muslims, the village is known as the Village Agricultural Tourism and Culture. Kebonagung Tourism Village is located about 17 km to the south of Yogyakarta city. This village location is also adjacent to the location of the tomb of the kings of Mataram in Imogiri. Kebonagung village consists of 5 padukuhan namely: Padukuhan Tlogo, Padukuhan Circle, Padukuhan Mandingan, Padukuhan Kanten, Padukuhan Jayan.
The tourists who come to the Tourist Village Kebonagung can stay at the homestay. So that, tourists can directly observes and follow the daily life of residents. Homestay is spread over five dukuh in Kebonagung Tourism Village. Activities that can be done by tourists is plowing fields, planting, livestock breeding, and various other agricultural activities.
In addition, tourists can also learn batik, gamelan, traditional cooking, and watching the performing of arts and jathilan gejog lesung. The attractiveness that is offered by the Tourism Village Kebonagung is tourist direct involvement in the agricultural community activities such as plowing fields, etc. Besides agriculture and culture, this tourism village presents Kebonagung Tourist Village water canoeing and dragon boat.
