HISTORY
Beringharjo market is one of components of the Kingdom’s city pattern. It used to be called “United Four” which are Palace, the Square, Market and Mosque.

The location used to be a dirty large area with many Benjamin trees used for the people to gather.

The developing situation forced the Government to build a center market in Yogyakarta. On March 24, 1925, Nederlansch Indisch Beton Maatschapij built the market. In the end of March 1926, it was finished and started to be operated a month latter.

The name Beringharjo was given by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX, who wanted all the institutions under Ngayogyakarta Kingdom using Java name. Beringharjo itself was taken because the location used to be a benjamin forest that also represents great and shelter for the people. It perfectly represents the image of the market itself as the center market or the “Big” market of Yogyakarta.
