Akademi Akuntansi YKPN (AA YKPN) was established in Yogyakarta on March 22, 1970 and in the first year, the number of registered students in AA YKPN was just 81 person. AA YKPN achieved registered status from Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Cq. Direktur Pendidikan Tinggi No. 217/DPT/B/1970 October 30, 1970.

Up to 1973 AA YKPN used Balai RK Surokarsan as the place of study. Under the consent of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX, since 1974 until present time, Kampus Balapan at Jl. Gagak Rimang is functioned as the place of study. In 1981 AA YKPN achieved status of "DIAKUI" based on SK No. 028/O/1981, and in 1991, AA YKPN obtained status of "DISAMAKAN" based on SK No. 0191/O/1991 tanggal 11 April 1991.

AA YKPN has placed itself as a leading educational institution in the field of accounting. For instance, AA YKPN become pioneer in updating program of study of accounting from Dutch colonialism system into a program with orientation to United States accounting system. This higher learning also publishes text-book from accounting practice  by Pusat Penerbitan AA YKPN.
