Gembira Loka means a place for fun. The first idea of creating this place initially
bagan in 1933, however there were many obstacles to be faced. Later, in 1953,
the Foundation of Kebun Raya and Gembira Loka were the institution in charge
to built it. The first step of developing this place was done on 1955 by Sri Paku Alam VIII, later to be continued until 1975. At that time, Gembira Loka was also declared to be independence.
This museum is one of the most complete one in Yogyakarta that has complete collection. Many plants and animals whether alive or dead are collected in this place. More than 60 species of distinctive plants and animal are available here such as miri hutan, kepel, randu alas, keben, siperes, etc. Moreover, the collection of animal species is more than 311 species such as tigers, muses, giraffes, anoa, elephants, crocodiles, and etc.
