NATURAL CONDITION
· On the north side, the land contains of water.
· On the southwest, the land also contains of water.
· On the center, flat land with many people.
 

TYPE OF THE LAND
· Regosal/volcanic between river Progo and river Opak (in Sleman and Bantul regency)
· Latosol dan Inargalit is located on Gunung Kidul and the hills of Bantul regency and Kulonprogo regency.
· Alluvial and Regosal are along the south side of Bantul regency and Kulonprogo regency.

The population in 1991: 3.004.046. In 1995: 3.154.265.

After the Independence proclamation on August 17, 1945, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Sri Paduka Paku Alam VIII accepted elevation charter to be Governor and Vice Governor of Yogyakarta Special Province from Republic Indonesia's President. Continued on September 5, 1945 he recommended a mandate namely Kasultanan territory and Pakualaman territory was a special territory which became a part of Republic of Indonesia according to chapter 18 constitution 1945. On October 30, 1945 he recommended a second mandate said that the government Implementation on special region of Yogyakarta would be executed by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Sri Paduka Paku Alam VIII together with National Committee Corporation worker.

 

Even though Yogyakarta city which was to be a part from Kasultanan or to be a part of Pakualaman had made regency’s Assembly and City Government council that was leaded by both of Kasultanan and Pakualaman regent, Yogyakarta city had not to be a municipality or autonomous city yet. Because autonomy power which contain of many government field was still on the Authority of the Yogyakarta Special Region.

Yogyakarta city which consist of Kasultanan territory and Pakualaman became a municipality or autonomy city by issue of Constitution No 17, 1947, on chapter I said that Yogyakarta City Regency which consist of Kasultanan territory and Pakualaman territory and also many places from Bantul Regency which now to be Pakualaman and Umbulharjo district decided as places which have right to arrange and concern his own official's house. The territory was called Haminte Yogyakarta City.

To operate the autonomy the first Mayor which was held by Ir. Moh. Enoh found some difficulties as the territory was still a part of Special region of Yogyakarta and the status had not released yet. The problem was getting real after there was Constitution No 22, 1948 about the principal of territory government, where the Special Region Yogyakarta as level I and Yogyakarta municipality as the level II which to be a part of Special Region of Yogyakarta.

The second mayor was held by Mr. Soedarisman Poerwokusumo whose position also as Daily Government Corporation and also doubled as legislative leader that named DPR GR with 25 members. DPRD city (City Assembly) formed on May 5, 1958 with 20 members as the result of election. By returning to the 1945 Constitution through the President Decrit of Juli 5, 1959, then the Constitution No. I, 1957 was changed into the Constitution No 18, 1974 about the principals government in territory. The duty of district head and Assembly divided and formed Vice District head Daily Government Council and also designation for territory of jurisdiction city changed to be Yogyakarta municipality.

Based on Tap MPRS No. XXI/MPRS/1966 issued Constitution No 5,1974 about the principals of government on territory. Based on the Constitution, DIY 15 a province and also a District level I led by district head called The Governor of Head Special District Yogyakarta and Vice Governor of Head Special District Yogyakarta which is not tide by certainly official period, the requirement and manners of elevation to district leader and others Vice District head, especially for your honor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Sri Paduka Paku Alam VIII. Whereas Yogyakarta Municipality is a territory level II which lead by Mayor head District stage II like others.

Going along with reformation period, a demands for running government on territory astronomically put to the front, then issue the Constitution No 22, 1999 about territory Government which arrange territorial authority to organize the autonomy territory widely, real and responsible. According to the Constitution No. 22, 1999 the term of Yogyakarta Municipality has been changed to be Yogyakarta City. Whereas is managed by a mayor.
