Yogyakarta Municipality is the capital of Yogyakarta Province. It is the only
area that has the status of Municipality whereas the other four are regencies;
those are regency of Sleman, Bantul, Kulon Progo, and Gunung Kidul.
Yogyakarta is located on the middle of Yogyakarta where Sultan Palace as the
cultural heart and center of spiritual dynamics stands with its elegance. Naturally,
Jogja becomes a great artistic, cultural, historical, and spiritual city. As inspiring

GEOGRAPHIC CONDITION OF YOGYAKARTA MUNICIPALITY
BORDERS
Yogyakarta Municipality is the capital of Yogyakarta Province and is the only
area having the status of Municipality whereas the other four are Regencies.
Yogyakarta Municipality lies in the middle of Yogyakarta Province, with the following
borders :
In the north : Sleman Regency
In the east : Bantul & Sleman Regencies
In the south : Bantul Regency
In the west : Kulon Progo & Sleman Regencies
Yogyakarta Municipality lies between 11OO 24° 19° to 11OO 28° 53° East Longitude
and 7° 49° 26° to 070° 15° 24° South Longitude with the height of averagely 114
m above sea level.
NATURAL CONDITION
Yogyakarta Municipality mostly consists of low ground, that is the area from
the west to the east is relatively flat and the area from the north to the south
has the slope of ± 1 degree, and there are 3 (three) rivers passing through Yogyakarta
Municipality, those are :
Gajah Wong River in the east
Code River in the center
Winongo River in the west
WIDTH OF AREA
Yogyakarta Municipality has the narrowest area when compared to other local area
that is only 32.5 Km2, meaning only 1.025% of the total width of Yogyakarta Province.
The area of 3,250 hectare comprises 14 sub districts, 45 villages, 617 RWs (a
neighborhood association comprising some RTs) and 2,531 RTs (the smallest unit
in neighborhood association), and is occupied by 489,000 people (data per December
1999) with the density rate of 15,000 people / km2.
TYPE OF LAND
The land in Yogyakarta Municipality is quite fertile and is a good area for various
agricultural plants, because it lies in the valley of Mount Merapi (fluvial volcanic
foot plain) thus consisting regosol soil and or light volcanic soil.
CLIMATE
Rainfall rate is averagely 2,012 mm annually with 119 rainy days. The average
temperature is 27.2°C and the average humidity is 24.7%. The usual wind is Monsoon
wind and during the rainy season the wind from southwest blows at 220° direction
. This wind is wet and may cause rain. In the dry season monsoon blows from southeast
direction. This wind is dry and blows at ± 90° - 140° with the average speed of
5 – 16 knot / hour.
DEMOGRAPHY
The population increases so fast. At the end of 1999 the total population of
Yogyakarta Municipality was 490,433 people and at the end of June 2000 the population
was 493,903 with the density rate of 15,197 / km2 .
HISTORY
After the treaty of Giyanti in 1775, Mataram was divided into two kingdoms, Kasultanan
Surakarta Hadiningrat led by Sunan Pakubuowono III and Kasultanan NgaYogyakarta
Hadiningrat led by Susunuhan Pakubuwono II who was called as Sultan Hamengku Buwono
I after replacing his brother, Pangeran Mangkubumi. He began the birth line for
Sultan until recent time. Later, Mataram was called as Yogyakarta or Jogja.
In the Independence Day, Yogyakarta Hadiningrat (Kasultanan) and Pakualaman (Kadipaten)
united and joined with Republic of Indonesia. Later, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono
IX became the governor and Sri Paku Alam VIII as the vice governor. Since that
day, Yogyakarta was popular with special province thank to its role before the
Independence Day.
