Located on the southeast of Yogyakarta, regency of Gunungkidul is one of five regencies in special province of Yogyakarta that has the largest area than the others regencies. Mostly, regency of Gunung Kidul consists of highlands and hill. Therefore, it is no wonder that many natural tourism potential need to be maintained and developed.

Regency of Gunungkidul is one of five regencies in special province of Yogyakarta, with area 1.485,36 kilometers or approximately 46,63% of the whole area of Yogyakarta. Regency of Gunungkidul consists of highlands and hills. Its topografi is divided into three Zones:

1. NORTH ZONE (ZONE BATUR AGUNG)
Its high is 200 - 700 meters above the surface of the water. This area is potential for natural tourism object and tourism of geology. It consists of district of Patuk, Nglipar, Ngawen, Semin, north Gedangsari and north Ponjong.

2. CENTRAL ZONE (ZONE LEDOK WONOSARI)
Its high is 150 – 200 meters above the surface of the water. This area is potential for natural tourism object, tourism of geology, and economic tourism. It consists of district of Playen, Wonosari, Karangmojo, north Semanu and central Ponjong.

3. SOUTH ZONE SELATAN (ZONE OF HILLS OF SERIBU)
Its high is 10 – 300 meters above the surface of the water. This area is potential for natural tourism object, tourism of geology, and economic tourism. It consists of Tepus, Tanjungsari, Panggang, Purwosari, Paliyan, Saptosari, Girisubo, Rongkop, south Semanu and south Ponjong.

The potential of this area is now being developed to maintain and improve the tourism objects with providing some facilities, accommodation, transportation, telecommunication, water and souvenirs that can improve the quality and quantity of human resources to develop tourism.
