The goal of this event is to honour the holy month of Ramadhan and to honour the glory night (lailatul qadar) that is udually called as maleman or selikuran. The palace celebrates maleman/selikuran as a special royal ceremony hold before garebeg pasa by pasowanan selikuran in 21 of Ramadhan. It is inherited by Sultan Hamengku Buwono I to the next sultan. In the era of sri Sultan HB VIII (1921 – 1939), it was simplified and changed on pasowanan selikuran and since Sri Sultan HB IX abolished it.

Ngabekten is done on the 1st of Sawal (Idul Fitri) and in the era of Sultan HB IX, it was done in a more simple way. Sultan did not longer sit in the golden chair (dhampar kencana) and did not wear his great clothe (keprabon clothe).
