Village of Taruban is located on Tuksono, Sentolo, Kulon Progo. The area of Tuksono itself was established from two "kelurahan", such as Kelurahan Kalikutuk and Kelurahan Kalisana. In this area, there is a traditional ceremony known as Bersih Dusun Tuksono; however some says it as Bersih Desa Taruban. The ceremony is held once a year by the villagers of Taruban and Tuksono in the month of Sapar (Javanese month) after the first harvest; at Tuksono, the harvest comes twice. The D-day of the traditional ceremony is not always the same.
The ceremony has several important aims. The people of Tuksono want to thank to the Almighty through dhayang or ancestors of the village who have been giving good crops. Besides, it is also aiming to have safety from bad spirits or evil in order that they won't be disturbed by them with the help of dhayang Eyang Kertayudha.
Another aim is to cleansing any burden of life (resik sukerta/sesuker) to have a comfort life. In the ceremony, there is also an effort to maintain their ancestor's message, Eyang Kertayudha, to keep the whole village from visible disturbance, as well as the invisible ones. The process of the ceremony of Bersih Dusun Tuksono is divided into two sequence, ceremony of Mboyong Mbok Sri and ceremony at Sendang Kamulyan.
Ceremony of Mboyong Mbok Sri
Ceremony of Mboyong Mbok Sri is a tradition to worship Mbok Sri (Goddess of Rice)
by the farmers. After the first harvest (methik), the people has a "slametan methik"
(wiwit) with the children bringing "ubo rampe" such as janur kuning, kembang setaman,
kemenyan, kaca, suri (serit, jawa) air kendhi, jajan pasar, bungkusan nasi and
banana, to be brought to the field.
After the reading of mantra, the leader of the ceremony cuts the rice-plant to be made wedding doll named Parijata or Pari Penganten, then the children bring some of the rice-plant to four corners of the field. Then they provide the rice to the participants of the ceremony and the wedding doll is brought to the shed (petanen/pedharingan/senthong tengah).
People of Java thinks that the shed is particularly for Mbok Sri (Goddess of Rice) to have a rest, therefore, the shed is sacred and may not be used by common people. In the shed, there are also godhong kluwih, dhadhap serep, godhong mojo, godhong tebu, godhong jati and godhong luh for the cover of the rice. Godhong Jati means that people must be careful using the rice from the shed.
The offerings of Mboyong Mbok Sri are as follows:
- Sambel Gepleng (dele), a symbol of people of Tuksono,
- Dhem–dheman, from godhong dhadhap serep, godhong alang–alang, godhong turi,
godhong koro, gandhos katul, a symbol of safety,
- Srabi/Apem,
- Gudhangan, a symbol of life, and
- Tukon Pasar.
Ceremony at Sendang Kamulyan
This traditional ceremony is held at Sendang Kamulyan as a thankfulness to the
Almighty for the good harvest. The people bring rice and gather at Sendang Kamulyan.
After the pray, the rice is given to all participants. Somehow, they must prepare
cigarette and arak.
The offerings are as follows:
- tea and black coffee, for the ancestors,
- cigarette and arak, for Eyang Kertayuda,
