Village of Kanigoro is located at Subdistrict of Saptosari, on the southward of the subdistrict. Eventhough there is a traditional ceremony, called Labuhan Laut in Kanigoro, but the ceremony is popular as Labuhan Saptosari. The village is far from the city and it is one of ten village in Saptosari. There is no public transportation to Kanigoro or beach of Ngrenehan. But there is small path to the village more or less 20 kilometer.
Labuhan Saptosari or Sedekah Laut has been held several times (less than 10 times) since it is an adoption from a tradition at Baron. Actually, the people of Kanigoro had already a tradition called Golongan, but it is replaced with Labuhan Saptosari.
Ceremony of Golongan
Golongan is a tradition of Kanigoro which are mostly farmers but they also have
income from the beach of Ngrenehan. On particular season (labuh), local farmers
were used to look for teri which are abundant at the beach. Then they performed
a ceremony as a thankfulness, called ceremony of Golongan.
More or less ten years ago, people of Kanigoro was granted several ships. Then the farmers have much more income from the sea. This makes the people expand their work not only in land-farming (farmer) but also sea-farming (fisherman). As a consequence, the tradition moves into Labuhan Saptosari.
Ceremony of Labuhan Saptosari
This ceremony differs from Golongan, in time and in performance, offerings, and
the sequence. Labuhan Saptosari is held once a year every night of 1 Sura at 24.00
WIB by giving offerings to the sea of Ngrenehan in order to ask for safery from
the Almighty and giving offerings to the sea master (Nyai Roro Kidul) for the
safety and successfulness of the fishermen.
Before the ceremony, they have a religious celebration at the beach lead by Juru Kunci and then it is continued by Labuhan Saptosari in a formal sequences with several speeches from the local government. After all, every participants go to the beach bringin the offerings with musical background of gendhing Kebogiro.
There are seven pairs of offerings in Labuhan Saptosari:
- Satu jodho for fishermen
- Satu jodho for puppet show
- Satu jodho for shrimp basket
- Satu jodho for ships
- Satu Jodho for equipments of puppetry
- Satu Jodho for ceremony
- Satu Jodho for participants
Each offering has its own meaning. For instance the chicken, as a symbol of fishermen who dare to go to the sea. Gunungan in the shape of ship, as a symbol of earn-living. Jenang-jenangan, jenang abang as a symbol of mother, and jenang putih symbol of father. Tebu, symbol of people guardian. Meat serving, as symbol in fishing also sacrifice for the Queen of South. Kemben sutera ungu, as the clothes for the Queen of South and her soldiers. And also fruits, for the other spirits who live on the beach.
The convoy to the sea are as follows: gunungan (guwa), dhomas, local officers,
and fishermen. Gunungan is brought to the sea with a single boat. In the middle
of the sea, more or less one kilometer, gunungan is released by Juru Kunci with
the praying to the Queen of South:
"Nyuwun tedha rahayu slamet para nelayan, nek dibucali entene niki, dene onten
kekurangane isine guwo niki nyuwun pangapunten. Dene bokmenawi nelayan lampah
sepindhah, satrimah nyuwun ngapura, paranelayan nyuwun iwak."
