Babat Dalan Giring

Desa Giring, Kecamatan Paliyan, Gunung Kidul INDONESIA

Giring is a village in Subdistrict of Paliyan, which lies close to Wonosari on the southward. There are six hamlets in Giring, such as Bulu, Singkil, Pengos, Gunungdawa, Pulebener, and Nasri. Mostly the area are not fertile, forest, small field for corn. The villagers use woods for their kitchen and they take water from the river.

Village of Giring reminds to the name of Ki Ageng Giring which is related to a traditional ceremony of Babad Dalan. Giring was known also as Kyai Ageng Wonomenggolo, the son of Prabu Brawijaya IV.

At Giring and Sada there was a plague. The elders tried to find the tomb of Ki Ageng Giring. When they did, they had to clense the path to the tomb. They also found some area which had fragrant nuance, and some artefacts, such as a stick which is believe belonged to Ki Ageng Giring. They did a meditation and promised to celebrate "ambengan" if the village could be better without the plague. Somehow Ki Ageng Giring was burried at Village of Sada.

The story teaches people to "cleanse their soul from evil spirit", since Ki Ageng Giring was the student of Sunan Kalijaga. The people used to celebrate the tradition at Sada by "ringin kurung" and janur, and they brought clathung (arit) to take the janur (coconut leaves).
