Sendang Agung is a village located in Kecamatan Minggir, Sleman. In this place, there is a cultural ceremony related to "whorship" on Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung, who is believed as their ancestor from Majapahit Kingdom. This ceremony is known as ceremony of Tunggul Wulung which has particular relation to the success of local farmer's harvest.
The ceremony in general is also asking for safety and prosperity to the Almighty. However in reality, local people is still believe in spiritual power including their ancestors'. They will be more comfortable after making celebration of the ceremony since then they will get safety and power that beyond their own. The main point is that local people must perform the ceremony, even in simple form. If not they will worry about their safety in daily life.
Another reasons of local people of Sendang Agung Village are as follows:
- unity and solidarity of the people,
- clean and health environment,
- peace and prosperity of the village,
- avoiding natural disaster, and
- avoiding failed harvest or crops.
They achieve those goals from their ancestors. Its dissemination between the people is by gethok tular (mouth to mouth). Relating to the D Day, they can determine the month but it is always be held on Jumat Pon (= Friday) which is believed as the sacred days by Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung. Besides "rendhengan" harvest (in rainy seasons) also puts some important point over the timing of ceremony. There is also traditional dance of Tayub and arak (traditional liquor).
Ceremony of Tunggul Wulung began since the downfall of Majapahit Kingdom whilst Islam entered Nusantara. Many of the royal family could not accept the existence of Islam, since they had Hindu. However there was Islamic kingdom in Java, that is Demak ruled by Sultan Trenggono with Wali Sanga as the advisors. Majapahit Kingdom ruled by Prabu Brawijaya was decreasing and those moslems entered Majapahit with Islam religion by having the daughter of Brawijaya with the son of Demak, that is Adipati Terung.
Then began the era of spreading Islam in Majapahit. Many royal family of Majapahit left the kingdom including Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung. He went from Majapahit with his seven guards, with his wife Raden Ayu Gadhung Mlati, and also Raden Sutejo and Raden Purworejo which could not be seen by anyone. Besides the travel of Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung was also followed by abdi dalem kinasih, Nyai Dakiyah.
The travel of Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung to the West arrived at Beji Hamlet (Diro) where he made "pesanggrahan" (a small palace) which can be recognize today with the heritage of statue pepethan lembu Andhini and sapi Gumarang. On one Friday night (Jumat Pon), Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung asked for guidance to the Almighty under the tree of Timoho near the river bank of Progo. Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung with his wife and his seven guards and Nyai Dakiyah were finally mokswa (the body is gone to spiritual world), also with his pets: perkutut, gemak, macan gembong, macan kumbang, macan putih, nogo ijo, nogo ireng, and jago "wiring kuning".
There is a tomb on the place of mokswa Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung, and it is believed as a sacred and magical place (wingit), then many people often visit the "tomb" for particular reason.
Tradition of tayuban begins when a ledhek (female dancer) who was searching for prosperity in order to get a lot of money when she dances. Then she made a "tirakat" (festing) inside the area of Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung's tomb, however she was then misteriously dissapeared. Local people believes that she is taken by Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung.
During the following years in every ceremony of Tunggul Wulung, there is also kenduri (praying together) at the area of the tomb and at the house of Juru Kunci which is then continued by tayuban with gendhing "Sekar Gadhung" and the ledhek would dance without any ibing (dancer's mate), since people believes that the mate would be Ki Ageng Tunggul Wulung himself.
