Bersih Desa Giwangan

Giwangan is one of subdistrict in District of Umbulharjo, Yogyakarta. Most of the people in Giwangan works in farming sector. Unfortunately the farming area is obviously decreasing. However there is still a cultural ceremony which is held in farming athmosphere as a cultural heritage from their ancestor who worked also as a farmer. The ceremony at sub urban area of Jogjaa is known as Bersih Desa Giwangan.

It was began right after the harvest. During the following years the traditional ceremony is held on Besar (one of Javanese months) once a year. There is no fixed date or day for the ceremony but it must be established not on Pon days (one of Javanese days) since it is a forbidden day for the ceremony. People believes that that Pon day is the day when Panembahan Senopati died. It is held on some Pendopo, or at the house of the religion leader such as Rois or Kaum.

The goal of the ceremony is a benediction to the Great Almighty because the people of Giwangan has been delivered to the prosperity for the whole previous year and also asking for blessing for the coming years at Giwangan.

Bersih Desa Giwangan is begun with various of preparation as such to clean the whole subdistrict by the people at their own village or hamlet environment. They will repaire the streets for a better physical condition and also they will prepare some art performances which will be exhibited at the same time with the ceremony of Bersih Desa Giwangan. Mostly men are the executors of the preparation.

Whilst the women will do the food servings such as "nasi ambengan" for "kenduri" (= traditional religion activity). Some women will also make "tumpeng" and "sesaji" which will be given to the people after kenduri. The content of sesaji are as follows:
- Nasi Gurih, offering to the ancestors
- Ingkung, symbol of human being as a baby
- Jajan Pasar, symbol of blessing for the community
- Pisang Raja, symbol of hope and prosperity
- Nasi Ambengan, as a thankfulness of gifts from the Almighty
- Jenang, jenang in red and white (symbol of father and mother) and jenang palang (to avoid danger)
- Tumpeng, such as tumpeng lanang (symbol of the Almighty) and tumpeng wadon (symbol of respect to the ancestors) which is smaller, and
- Ketan Kolak Apem, offering to the local dhanyang (= spiritual power) of Giwangan.

The execution of this ceremony is done by all the people of Giwangan. Each of them bring "nasi ambengan" to the house of Rois for a kenduri where all of the sesaji has been delivered previously. After all the people gathered, Rois will guide and lead everybody to pray to the Almighty. Then everybody will eat together in the house. Somehow the sesaji may be brought home for a blessing. In the past, kenduri was held at noon, but recently it is held in the evening which is continued by several art performance. The last will be a shadow puppet show with a story about "Tumuruning Dewi Sri" (= the visit of Dewi Sri) to respect Dewi Sri as the goddess of rice and field.
