KRT Sutambo Jogobroto, the master of classic dance of Yogyakarta, was born in Yogyakarta, October 20th 1918. His formal education was only completed at HIS Taman Siswa in 1935. He was grown up in the family who loved the world of art. His father, R.I. Pangarso, servant of Kraton Yogyakarta (abdi dalem), was an artist of karawitan. The house at Suryowijayan was often used for dance practices such as Tari Ande-ande Lumut and Tari Topeng. Since then, Sutambo was interested in learning the art of dance.

In 1935, Sutambo learned the art of dance seriously at Kradha Beksa Wirama and for his talent, he could be a good dancer. In 1936, he officially became the Kraton Yogyakarta's dancer and in 1937 he was appointed "jajar minuman" as Sosrodegsono. In 1939, he was appointed "wakil carik bibliothek" with the name of Sastrodarsono.

In Japan era, 1945, Kraton Yogyakarta ordered him to teach Javanese dance among schools in Yogyakarta, in order to reduce the Japan dance infiltration. In the Independence, Sutambo visited several countries in Indonesia Art Mission, three months in China (1954), in East Europe and Africa (1957), in America of The New York World Fair for a year (1964). Also in some parts of Indonesia, he travelled to Kalimantan (1956), participated in Ramayana National Fest at Prambanan (1971), and Ramayana International Festival at Pandaan East Java (1971).

For his master in the classic dance of Yogyakarta, Sutambo was honoured to teach at several dance groups, such as Kridha Beksa Wirama (1940-1963), Irama Citra (1950-1965), Kraton Yogyakarta (1972-now), and Pamulangan Beksa Ngayogyakarta, and also he helped as a teacher at SMKI. Tari "Sari Martoyo Gagah" was one of his masterpiece.
