When the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) changed its name to ISI and relocated to a larger campus in the suburbs of Jogja, the buildings that was home to famous Indonesian artists such as Widayat, Heri Dono, Butet Katarajasa, Hanafi,Jaduk Ferianto and others became empty and was left to deteriorate.
Realizing that a true artistic legacy was in the verge of destruction, the Head of the Yayasan Yogyakarta Seni Nusantara (YEAN), KPH Wironegoro, fought to preserve these historic buildings by turning them into the Jogja National Museum (JNM) Compound. Currently restoration work is being conducted in the main buildings. However various art organizations and associations have requested to use the site as a performance area in its current state. Thereby becoming one of the most sought after outdoor venues in Jogja.
The museum plans to have a soft launch with the completion of the first phase of the renovation in January 2008 with the generous help from our Founding Partners, PT Carrefour Indonesia. Quick to join in on the renovation was the Taiwan Trade and Economic Office and various prominent individuals and organizations.
Due to the devastating earthquake in May 27, 2006 renovation and sponsorship work came to a halt. The Yayasan (foundation) immediately focused on the relieve efforts by becoming international coordinators bringing in much needed supplies and money from countries all over the world. The Gampingan Compound also became temporary shelters and schools for the surrounding communities.
Currently we have continued the renovation of the museum compound and are planning exciting programs and art exhibitions for the upcoming year.
