If you travel to the City of Gudeg by train, you might want to stop and step
down at Tugu Railways Station Yogyakarta. This railways station is the main gate
for tourists to spend their leisure time and vacation in Jogja. Here thousands
of passangers use the train everyday for many occasions such as visiting family
or friends, study, business, etc.
When you step for the first time on Tugu Railways Station, your mind will go along the station as if you are brought to the past, the era of Dutch colonialism, since the building is a heritage made by the Dutch. Tugu Railways Station becomes one of the witness of Indonesian people's history and it gives you the trails through details of the building, of exterior and interior which blend with the business in the railways station.
Located in the middle of the downtown, between three legendary places, monument
of Tugu Yogyakarta, Malioboro, and Sultan's Palace of Yogyakarta, this railways
is easy to reach, and you could visit various tourism sites from this railways,
also to hotels or motels, schools with traditional or modern transportation vehicles.
On foot from the railways, you should enjoy Malioboro at noons and nights, where there are Gudeg Jogja and lesehan Malioboro. You might also want to visit Sultan's Palave of Yogyakarta by delman or becak (pedicap) in less than 10 (ten) minutes.
HISTORY
Tugu Railways Station was a result of railways transportation system development
of Nederlandsch-Indische Compagnie for passangers and harvest in Java, Sumatra,
Sulawesi, and Kalimantan. On June 17 1864, General Governor Mr. L.A.J.W. Baron
Sloet van Beele put the first stone for the trails in Java. This route was managed
by Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij and operated since August 10 1867
with city route from Semarang to Tanggung, Surakarta.
The new routes were developed into 166 km to Jogja and Railways Station of Lempuyangan
Yogyakarta was the first one to establish and started to operate on March 2nd
1872 for Semarang-Jogja. Whilst Tugu Railways Station was opened on May 2nd 1887.
Route on Surakarta-Jogja was built since 1899 and the first train for passangers
was operated on February 1 1905.
