Traditional ceremony in Java relating to birth is Puputan. Birth tradition of Puputan aims to requesting the welfare for the baby. The set of offerings:
- For noble family: nasi gudangan, jenang abang putih (red and white porridge), five types of porridge, and jajan pasar (various snacks usually available at traditional market).
- For common people: nasi jangan, jenang abang putih, jenang baro-baro, and jajan pasar.

Puputan is the time when the baby’s umbilical cord breaks off (puput) after birth. At that time the family will perform a puputan ceremony in the form of kendhuri, bancakan (ritual feast), and formally announcing the baby’s name. It is held after dusk, and attended by the baby, the mother, the shaman, the elders of the village, and relatives.
