Tradition of Mendhak is one of the ritual in death tradition in Javanese culture. Traditional ceremony of Mendhak is done personally or in-group to commemorate one’s passing away. The outfits needed for mendhak are among others: tumpeng, sega uduk, side dishes, kolak, sticky rice, and apem. Sometimes, optionally, before or even after the mendhak ceremony held, the late’s descendant visit the grave.

The ceremony is held three times within a thousand days of passing away: fist, mendhak pisan, ceremony to commemorate a year of passing away (365 days); second, mendhak pindho, ceremony to commemorate two years of passing away; third, mendhak telu or pungkasan or nyewudina, is held to commemorate a thousand day of passing away.

According to Javanese believe, after a thousand days of passing away, the late’s soul has been entering the eternal world or the hereafter. Again, according to the belief, to come into the hereafter, the soul shall go through many long processes. Therefore, it is necessary to have ceremony to escort the soul.
