Tradition of Khitanan or Supitan is aimed at requesting the welfare for the child and expecting that he will be productive (able to have offsprings later in the future, not barren).
The set of offerings:
- Noble family: tumpeng robyong, tumpeng gundul, tumpeng songgobuwono, tumpeng
kencono, jenang baro-baro.
- Common people: nasi golong with its side dishes, tumpeng gurih with its side
dishes, tumpeng among-among, jenang abang putih, roasted chicken, and jajan pasar.
Khitanan is done in the morning or afternoon, attended by the boy, ulama, the parents, juru supit/bong (professional circumciser), and close neighbors. There are some forbidden food in this ceremony, i.e. the food with putrid taste or odor of fish.
Especially for royal family, about ten to twelve year old son, the circumcision is generally done in the court area and attended by Sultan’s close relatives and the royal family without inviting other guests. The steps to take involve siraman (take the circumcised son a bath) gres (the circumcision process) and lenggahan (fiesta).
The ceremony is as a sign of starting a child’s adolescence. Sultan’s circumcised sons cannot stay any longer together with the mother in Kaputren, a staying home for Sultan’s daughters and must have moved to kasatriyan, a staying home for Sultan’s circumcised son, until they get married prevails in the court.
