Merapi Still On Level 4

Monitoring data is still showing a high activity. Volcano status is still on alert level 4 (AWAS) mostly for sector of Gendol and radius within 8 km from the summit.

Visual observation on July 1st 2006: the weather around the summit was clear on the morning. White-thick solfatara gas emitted moderately about 350 m. It was observed from Babadan observatory at 05.30 WIB. No visual observation of lava avalanches and pyroclastic flow from all observatories.

Within 1 July 2006, seismic record comprised of : 4 multiphase eqs, 250 avalanches eqs, 13 pyroclastic flow, and 4 tectonic eqs. No events of volcanic earthquakes.

Visual observation 0n 1 July 2006 (till 06.00 WIB): the summit was covered by the fog. The summit only could be seen from Selo observatory within 02.15 till 06.00 WIB. White-thick solfatara gas emitted weakly to the east about 650 m. It was observed from Selo observatory at 05.35 WIB.

Seismic record comprised of 35 events of avalanches eqs, 3 events of tectonic eqs, and 4 events of pyroclastic flow. No record of multiphase and volcanic earthquakes.

Volcanic activity of G.Merapi is still fluctuating in decrease trend. Lava avalanches and pyroclastic flow events continue, but getting down in frequency and distance.

Volcano status is still on the highest level due to its high possibility of pyroclastic flow occurrence as result of surficial magmatic activity around the summit.

Due to this volcano status, areas along 300 m from the side of rivers of Krasak/Bebeng, Bedog, Boyong and Gendol, and within radius of 8 km from the summit is forbid for any activities.
