Yoshiko Shimada: Bones in Tansu - Family Secrets

At Cemeti Art House Yogyakarta, Yoshiko Shimada is going to show her works Bones
in Tansu - Family Secrets on July 18 - 27, 2007. The opening will be held on July
17, 2007 at 19.30 PM. Artist Talk wiil also be held on Friday Jum'at, July 20,
2007 at 19.30 PM.
Yoshiko Shimada is an artist-in-resedency at Cemeti Studio Residency during July
2007. Yoshiko present her recent project that has been starting since 2004, Family
Secrets. In Family Secrets, Yoshiko put some drawers to keep all of the stories
she has been collected. She transformed the stories into visual works with drawing
and etching. Yoshiko asks the audience to be involved in this project gy write
down any paintful family secret they (anonymously) wish to share.
Yoshiko works in many techniques, particularly video and photography. She explores
Japanese history, women, violence, nationalism and the representation of memories.
Family Secret is a part of her effort to talk about those matters in a personal
scope.
Yoshiko Shimada was born in Tokyo in 1959. She studied etching to Katsuro Yoshida
at Bigakko, Tokyo. She has spent some of her life in Berlin and New York, and
she lives in Japan now. She has exhibited her works in many international events,
both in solo and group exhibitions.
